51st Air Police Squadron
Night Patrol
Hi....my name is Audo. As a K-9 I was trained in obedience and then assigned to my handler Airman Wayne W. Wolf. We trained to work together under combat conditions which meant I responded to no one but my handler and would attack to kill anyone else. After completing this training we were assigned to K-13 Air Base, Air Police Squadron Dog patrol, Suwon Korea. Our job was to work the perimeters of the Air Base, make contact with the enemy, hold them off and alert the base. I was wounded twice while working with Airman Wolf, and was returned back to active duty after my recovery. I shared a common love and respect with my handler.
Audo served his nation
and handler above and beyond the call of duty. He was my best friend and saved
my life on many occasions He was always there for me and I can't thank him
enough for his unswerving loyalty.
A3C Wayne W. Wolf, AF19443152 Suwon Air Base, Korea, 1953 The day begins about two hours before dusk first feeding and grooming Audo then I go to the mess hall for chow. When I return from chow it is time to put my gear on and get Audo ready for the night patrol. The sergeant of the guard comes through the barracks and assigns our patrol area. It is getting dark as we work our way from the main area of the base and pass some anti-aircraft positions. Arriving in our assigned area the night goes by oh so slow and Audo is not much of a talker. We keep moving as we have a better chance of finding the bad guys. It was about mid-way though the night and we were about two hundred yards from a small village when someone opened up on us. We quickly went into the rice paddy, rolled about 20 feet though the water, when I looked to see if I could see anyone. I fired a round, maybe he would fire back and I could see the flash of his gun, he did. Now I had a fix on him, he was in a tree about 75 to 100 yards from us. Moving back the way we came I opened up with my carbine. We exchanged fire and then things got quite. I don't know how long Audo and I stayed in that rice paddy, but after a while we knew we had to check this fellow out. Neither one us wanted to leave that paddy, but Audo made me, so we went to find out if this bad guy was still around he wasn't. It was not a good night for either of us and we spent the rest of it jumping at our shadow. Dawn finally came and we start back to the safey of our barracks. Again it's time to feed and groom Audo and I then head for the mess hall. Back at the barracks we all chat for awhile and one by one head for our bunks.
